Exporting and Sharing

Once your markup is ready, tap the Share button (square with an up-arrow) in the toolbar to bring up the share sheet.

Export formats

Annotate offers three image formats:

  • PNG - lossless, supports transparency. Default for screenshots and anything with text or sharp edges.
  • JPEG - lossy, smaller files. Good for photographic content.
  • HEIC - Apple's modern lossy format, smaller than JPEG at the same visual quality.

Change the default format in Settings → Export format.

Share sheet

The system share sheet shows a thumbnail of your annotated image at the top, alongside the format and file size (e.g. "PNG Image · 248 KB"). Below are all the apps that can handle images:

  • Save to Photos
  • Save to Files
  • Mail, Messages, Slack, Discord, etc. - every messaging app you have installed
  • AirDrop
  • Dropshare - uploads via your default Dropshare connection, returns a shareable URL

Save to Recents

When Save to Recents is on (default, toggle in Settings), every export is also saved to Annotate's history. Re-open the session anytime from the Recents sheet on the start screen - all your annotation layers come back intact, ready to edit further.

Free limit

The first 5 exports are free. After that, a one-time in-app purchase unlocks unlimited exports. Tap Settings → Unlock Annotate to purchase or Restore Purchases if you've bought it on another device.
